Eckes-Granini's Orange Juice Named 'Packaging Trick of the Year' Amidst Price Hikes

Eckes-Granini's orange juice has been named 'Packaging Trick of the Year 2024' by the Consumer Advice Centre Hamburg. The company responded, stating that the composition of nectars is legally regulated and all information is clearly stated on the label. However, consumers have seen a significant increase in food prices, with some products doubling in cost.

In 2024, consumers faced a 31.5 percent average price increase for recorded products, up from 23.5 percent in 2023. This included five very high price increases where the price at least doubled, compared to just one such increase in 2023. Despite this, fewer packaging tricks were discovered in 2024, with 67 products affected versus 104 in the previous year.

The Granini orange juice, named 'Packaging Trick of the Year', was replaced with an orange nectar containing only half the fruit content. The Consumer Advice Centre Hamburg criticized the lack of clear indication of this change on the label. As a result, the product was removed from sale in 20 supermarkets in Hamburg due to price disputes between Eckes-Granini and retailers. Packaging tricks often involve reducing contents or replacing high-quality ingredients with cheaper ones, affecting indulgence foods and branded products.

The Consumer Advice Centre Hamburg has highlighted the issue of packaging tricks, with consumers paying more for less. Despite legal regulations, clear communication of changes in product composition remains a concern. Consumers paid 2.0 percent more for food in December 2024 due to inflation, adding to the financial strain caused by these practices.
