New Leadership at the Writers Guild of America East

The Writers Guild of America East (WGAE) has a new president as Tom Fontana was elected to the position on Thursday. Fontana, a renowned television and film writer, is set to begin his term on Friday.

Alongside Fontana, several other writers were elected to various seats on the union's council for film, television, and streaming, online media, and broadcast, cable, and streaming news.

In the film, television, and streaming category, Chris Gethard, Erica Saleh, Liz Hynes, Sarah Montana, and Sharyn Rothstein were all elected. Gethard is a well-known comedian and actor, while Saleh, Hynes, Montana, and Rothstein are all accomplished writers in the industry.

Nitish Pahwa and Sie Morley were elected to the council for online media, and Samantha Smylie and Nicole Conlan were also elected to the same council.

The election saw a relatively low turnout, with 14% of eligible voters in the film, television, and streaming category participating, 5% in online media, and 7% in broadcast, cable, and streaming news participating.

Sasha Stewart was elected as the secretary-treasurer. Stewart has written on the limited FX/Hulu series Dying for Sex and the Netflix docuseries Amend: The Fight for America.

Michael Rauch was elected as the vice president of the film, television, and streaming sector. Rauch has written and produced shows like Fox's Monarch and CBS' Instinct.

It's worth noting that the search results do not provide information about the current vice president of the WGAE, Lisa Takeuchi Cullen, resigning on Friday.

The ballot count for the election was supervised by EBallot.

With the new leadership in place, the Writers Guild of America East is poised to continue its advocacy for writers' rights and fair compensation in the ever-evolving media landscape.
