Saying Goodbye to Lowensenf Production in Düsseldorf by 2025: The End of an Era

Mustard manufacturing in Duesseldorf is scheduled to halt by the close of 2025. - Düsseldorf's Löwensenf factory to close by the end of 2025

Get ready, Düsseldorf, the end is near for iconic mustard brand Lowensenf. Develey Senf & Feinkost GmbH, Lowensenf's owner, announced they'll gradually phase out production at its Düsseldorf location by year's end. Back in February, they hinted at relocating, but left fans of the tangy condiment guessing about the timeline.

The production relocation plans come with an agreement with the works council and the trade union, establishing interest equalization and social arrangements. These measures cover the factory closure, relocation plans, and severance packages for the 48 employees impacted.

But fear not, Lowensenf enthusiasts! Develey assures us that the beloved brand won't vanish completely. Lowensenf will still be produced at other Develey group locations, keeping the classic recipe and taste intact.

Though saying goodbye to the Düsseldorf factory, which has been a fixture since 1965, Develey isn't completely abandoning the city. A charming mustard shop in the Old Town will remain open as a nod to tradition.

Develey bought Lowensenf GmbH in 2001, but the rented production site posed limited development prospects, leading to the relocation decision. Last year, an impressive 6,000 tons of mustard were crafted in Düsseldorf.

  • Works council

As for why this relocation is happening, common reasons behind such moves include:

  1. Lower operational costs, including labor, energy, and raw materials
  2. Improved access to new markets or suppliers
  3. The opportunity to adopt advanced manufacturing technologies

As for the employees, they may face job losses unless Develey offers relocation opportunities. The company might also provide training and support during this transition to help their workforce adapt. However, relocation could also impact the local community by affecting job security and economic activity.

The brand also won't disappear from the scene. Develey's main priority is maintaining brand continuity and quality during the relocation process. The company may even use this opportunity to rebrand or refocus marketing efforts, while using their new, efficient location to streamline operations and ensure the brand's success in the long run.

  1. To better manage operating costs, access new markets and adopt advanced manufacturing technology, Develey Senf & Feinkost GmbH has decided to relocate the Lowensenf production from its Düsseldorf location, potentially impacting the jobs and local economy of the city.
  2. In light of the upcoming relocation, Develey is working on ensuring continued brand success by providing vocational training and support to their employees, while also considering rebranding or refocusing marketing efforts, utilizing the new location's resources for more efficient operation and quality product delivery in the future.
