Düsseldorf Airport Customs Seize €515K in Undeclared Goods, Launch 267 Proceedings
Düsseldorf Airport's customs authority (Zoll) had a busy summer holiday period, seizing a substantial amount of undeclared goods and initiating numerous proceedings.
The customs team intercepted 411,000 unregistered cigarettes, 153 kilograms of tobacco, and 10 liters of alcohol. They also discovered over 30 cases of undeclared cash, totaling 515,000 euros. Michael Walk, spokesperson for the main customs office, reported that only two wildlife protection violations occurred during this period, both involving coral stones.
In total, customs initiated 229 criminal proceedings and 38 administrative offence proceedings. These included 174 cases of attempted tax evasion through unregistered luxury goods or cigarettes, and 35 cases of the banned import of medication. Additionally, 20 cases involved the transportation of prohibited weapons. The customs authority secured approximately 40,000 euros in guarantees for expected fines in cash declaration cases.
