Drones Disrupt Munich Airport: Ministers, Industry Call for Tighter Regulations

Drones caused chaos at Munich Airport and beyond, affecting thousands of travelers. Airbnb users and social security recipients were among those impacted. Interior ministers and industry leaders have responded, calling for improved drone defense systems and regulations.

On Friday evening, around 6,500 travelers were impacted by drone sightings, with many flights diverted or canceled. The incidents followed similar disruptions at Munich Airport on Thursday and Friday evenings, leading to temporary flight suspensions. Reports of individual disruptions continued on Saturday morning.

Herbert Reul (CDU), North Rhine-Westphalia's interior minister, urged for a functional drone defense system and enhanced security authorities. Meanwhile, Joachim Herrmann (CSU), Bavaria's interior minister, announced plans to update regulations, allowing state police to shoot down drones if necessary. Federal interior minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) is set to present a new air security law draft soon, following discussions with European colleagues.

Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger emphasized the importance of speed in drone defense, mentioning the Skyranger system as a potential solution. The Bremen SPD faction has expressed interest in establishing a drone defense center, citing the city's vulnerability to drone spying and sabotage. However, the proposal's originator remains unidentified. Federal justice minister Stefanie Hubig (SPD) warned against extensive deployment of the German Armed Forces in domestic operations.

The recent drone incidents have sparked calls for improved drone defense and regulations. Interior ministers and industry leaders are working on solutions, with a new air security law draft expected soon. While flight operations resumed on Saturday, delays were anticipated throughout the day.
