With an innovative design boasting not one, not two, but THREE different obverses - a historical first for UK commemorative coins - the 2015 Battle of Britain 50p stands out from the crowd. Ever stumbled upon one in your change? If so, have you noticed the differences?
Flashback to 2019:
To mark the 75th anniversary of D Day and the 50th Anniversary of the 50p, the Royal Mint reissued the Battle of Britain 50p as part of the 50p Military Set. This sparked curiosity as we now have FOUR different obverses to appreciate!
The new addition features Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, making this coin a true collector's item.
The 50p Military Set includes five 50p coins that have been struck in Brilliant Uncirculated quality to honor some of Britain's most significant military moments.
Error or Intentional?
In early 2015, the Brilliant Uncirculated 50p was issued, and it was swiftly dubbed an "error coin." Coins sold in presentation packs were produced without the denomination anywhere on the coin, sparking a frenzy among collectors. Some even managed to sell these coins on the secondary market for nearly £100 each!
The controversy surrounding the coin reached boiling points, and the Royal Mint confirmed that the coins intended for later release in 2015 would bear the '50 PENCE' denomination. But was it an accident or a strategic move from the royal mint?
