District Council Approves 2025 Budget With Significant Deficit
The district council has approved the 2025 budget with a significant deficit, despite raising the district surcharge to 55 percent. The budget still has a gap of 28.25 million euros, and the debt is projected to nearly double by the end of 2028.
The budget expects a deficit of 13.7 million euros for the remaining two weeks of the budget year. Despite this, the district council members acknowledged the financial constraints but saw no alternative to passing the budget. The investment program foresees payments of 70.6 million euros in 2025 and 296 million euros by 2028, causing debt to increase. By the end of 2028, the debt is currently calculated to exceed the 300 million euro mark. Landrat Jens Grote expressed optimism that necessary investments in schools, kindergarten expansion, and other projects will be ensured despite financial constraints.
The 2025 budget was passed with a deficit of 28 million euros and a new debt of 39 million euros. The budget was passed with a broad majority, with four abstentions and one negative vote.
