Geely Galaxy M9: A Powerful and Affordable Full-Size Plug-In Hybrid SUV
Geely, the Chinese automaker, has unveiled the latest addition to its lineup – the Geely Galaxy M9, a full-size plug-in hybrid SUV. The M9 is set to make waves in the large SUV segment, offering a powerful hybrid powertrain and competitive pricing.
The M9 boasts a combination of a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine (120 kW / 161 hp) and three electric motors, resulting in a massive combined output of 520 kW (697 hp). This setup allows the M9 to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in a swift 4.5 seconds.
In terms of dimensions, the M9 measures 5205 mm in length, 1999 mm in width, 1800 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 3030 mm. These specifications place it in the large SUV category, comparable to vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz GLS.
The M9 offers a flexible 6-seat layout, with dual independent seats in the second row for enhanced comfort. The SUV comes with two battery options: an 18.4 kWh battery providing approximately 85 km of pure electric range, and a larger 41.5 kWh battery for up to 185 km of electric range (CLTC). Fuel consumption when the battery is depleted is rated at 4.8 L/100 km.
The M9 also features dual-chamber air suspension with continuous damping control, ensuring both ride comfort and vehicle stability. The expected starting price for the M9 is around 250,000 yuan (~$34,650), making it a competitive option in the full-size SUV segment.
While the Geely Galaxy Star 8 EV, an electric sedan model, shares some relation with the M9, it is a less powerful sedan and not an SUV. Other models like the Geely Galaxy E5 or EX5 are compact electric SUVs aimed at the compact SUV market, with smaller battery packs and less power.
In the future, Geely plans to launch three new energy vehicles in 2024, including a pure electric SUV, a compact pure electric SUV, and a plug-in hybrid SUV. These vehicles will be developed based on a new architecture and design language.
The Geely Galaxy M9 represents Geely's push into the premium, performance-oriented electric and plug-in hybrid SUV market. With its powerful hybrid powertrain, flexible seating layout, and competitive pricing, the M9 is poised to offer a compelling option for consumers in the large SUV segment.
