Director of the IW, Hüther, advocates for a time off

Let's talk about Michael Huether, the man spicing up Germany's calendar debate

Michael Huether, a movers-and-shakers type at the Institute of the German Economy (IW Cologne), is stirring up a hornet's nest by suggesting we trim down Germany's holiday list. "Give us an extra day, and we're talking billions," Huether told the Funke media group in a bold statement.

His proposition? Ditch one holiday, and watch the economy soar. According to IW calculations, an extra workday could swell Germany's GDP by up to 8.6 billion euros. But where did that Buß- und Bettag (a religious holiday) go in '95? Huether points that very instance and says, "More work is feasible, if you want it bad enough."

However, not everyone is aboard the "less holidays, more work" train. Marcel Fratzscher, the head honcho at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin), isn't convinced. "Solving the labor shortage isn't about nixing holidays or overtime privileges," Fratzscher said, instead favoring the removal of employment barriers for women, refugees, and foreign nationals. "Immigration and Women Empowerment are the keys," he demands.

Now, swimming in the depths of this debate, it's essential to recognize that this issue doesn't swim in black and white. While the prospect of an economic boost can be tempting, the possible long-term consequences on social cohesion, employee morale, and overall economic health might be equally daunting.

Consider the swift economic gains a victory, but a holiday-free society may face more reduced consumer spending, decreased morale, and decreased social well-being. On the flip side, keeping holidays intact could boost tourism, benefit local businesses, enhance cultural celebrations, and improve employee morale and productivity upon return to work.

As we float around this debate, pondering the pros and cons, one thing's for sure—this is no ordinary splash in the pool; it's a wave crashing on the shore of societal change.

The community policy discussion about Michael Huether's proposal to optimize Germany's economy through vocational training and fewer holidays might consider finances by evaluating the potential benefits of increased GDP. On the other hand, businesses could be impacted by reduced consumer spending and decreased social well-being in a society with a significant decrease in holidays.
