Deutsche Bahn Discontinues Family Seating Reservations - Another Modification Announced

Let's Talk About the Latest with German Rail (Deutsche Bahn)

Starting this weekend, the good old family train ride ain't gonna be the same. Deutsche Bahn has pulled the plug on the so-called family reservation, transforming the long-distance rail journey experience for families. That's right, you can no longer reserve multiple seats at a flat rate for your brood. Each seat will cost you a ticket now, regardless of your little ones' ages. But don't worry, kiddos under 15 still get to travel for free if they're with an adult.

Here's the Lowdown on the Changes:

Along with the family reservation axing, the cost of seat reservations in second class has climbed by 30 cents to 5.50 euros per seat. First-class reservations now set you back 6.90 euros, compared to the previous 6.50 euros. So, if you got a family of four, you're looking at double the reservation costs compared to before.

But there's some good news too. Some passenger-friendly regulations have been introduced: Flex price tickets can now be canceled for free up to one day before the trip's start. Plus, some discount campaigns are kicking off.

Causing a Stir

The elimination of family reservations has sparked outrage and criticism, especially from political circles and transport associations. The ecological transport club Germany (VCD) has even launched a petition to stop this measure. A spokesperson from the Ministry of Transport also expressed uncertainty about the decision from the government.
