Defense spending of India's US$8.7 billion prompts requests for transparency
India has announced its latest defense modernization proposals, aimed at enhancing the country's defense capabilities across all three branches of the military. The Defence Acquisition Council, under Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, approved a new security splurge on August 5.
The defense budget for the coming financial year is a significant investment in India's pursuit of technological advancement and self-reliance. Among the proposals, the procurement of Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPAs) for the army, navy, and air force stands out as a new addition to the defense modernization plans previously approved.
The need for such an arsenal boost was acutely felt during Operation Sindoor, a major Indian military operation launched in May 2025, targeting Pakistan in response to Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. The operation demonstrated India's advanced military capabilities and strategic maturity, resulting in a diplomatic and military setback for Pakistan.
The defense ministry has also approved the maintenance of India's S-400 long-range air defence missile system, which played a critical role in the success of Operation Sindoor. The system, known for its long-range strike capability and effectiveness in neutralizing aerial assets, will continue to bolster India's air defense capabilities.
In addition to the MALE RPAs and the S-400 system, the defense package includes the procurement of 87 armed heavy-duty drones and more than 110 air-launched BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles. These acquisitions are part of India's efforts to modernize its defense capabilities and strengthen its response to cross-border threats.
The procurement of MALE RPAs is in addition to the maintenance of India's C-17 and C-130J fleets, ensuring the country's air transport capabilities remain robust. The defense budget for the coming financial year is a part of India's total defense budget of US$78.7 billion for the coming financial year, which was approved by parliament in February.
The latest modernization proposals underscore India's shift towards technologically advanced, precise, and politically calibrated military responses against terrorism and cross-border threats. The success of Operation Sindoor, which targeted Pakistan's critical defense infrastructure and resulted in the destruction of sophisticated military assets, underscores the growing importance of India's recent defense acquisitions such as the BrahMos missile, Akash system, and the S-400 air defense system.
In conclusion, India's defense modernization efforts are a strategic response to the evolving threat landscape in the region. The country's investments in advanced defense technologies are aimed at protecting its sovereignty effectively and maintaining a credible deterrence posture. The latest defense modernization proposals, including the procurement of MALE RPAs, armed heavy-duty drones, and air-launched BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, are a testament to India's commitment to its defense capabilities and its pursuit of technological advancement and self-reliance.
