North Rhine-Westphalia's Hospitality Industry Shows Mixed Results in 2021

The North Rhine-Westphalian (NRW) hospitality industry has experienced a mixed performance in 2021, with some sectors recording growth while others continue to struggle, according to recent data.

Preliminary results from Information and Technology North Rhine-Westphalia, the statistical office, show that turnover in the NRW hospitality industry increased nominally by 29.5% in October 2021 compared to the same month the previous year, adjusted for price increases. However, when compared to October 2019, turnover was 22.7% lower.

The hotel industry has been a bright spot, with turnover increasing by 74.4% in real terms compared to the previous year. Employment in the hotel sector also grew, with a 14.6% increase in employment.

Accommodation, on the other hand, has not fared as well. Compared to October 2019, turnover was 33.5% lower. Despite this, overall accommodation turnover increased by 68.6% in real terms compared to October 2020 and by 8.7% compared to the previous month.

The catering industry has also seen a decline in turnover compared to October 2019, with a 17.6% decrease. However, catering companies recorded a 16.9% increase in turnover compared to the previous year in October 2021.

The drink-focused catering sector has been particularly affected, with turnover 27.6% lower in October 2021 compared to the same month in 2019.

Camping sites, on the other hand, have seen a positive trend, with an increase of 14.7% compared to October 2019.

Overall, the first ten months of 2021 have not shown a recovery in the NRW hospitality industry's turnover compared to the same period in 2019. The industry's turnover for the first ten months of 2021 is lower compared to the same period in the previous year, both in real and nominal terms.

Despite these challenges, the hospitality industry in North Rhine-Westphalia continues to show signs of recovery and growth, particularly in the hotel sector. The presence of major international hotel chains and active recruitment for roles such as sales and marketing directors reflect an active and expanding hospitality employment market in the region.

The mixed results in the NRW hospitality industry's performance in 2021 extend to various sectors, including finance, as evidenced by real and nominal turnover decreases compared to 2019, according to data from Information and Technology North Rhine-Westphalia. However, the presence of major international finance entities such as Hilton and Marriott, who are actively recruiting sales and marketing directors in the region, points to a growing business environment in the hospitality industry of North Rhine-Westphalia.
