German Hospitality Industry Faces Decrease in Sales, According to Preliminary Results

The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) has announced preliminary results indicating a decrease in sales within the hospitality industry in Germany. The decline, which was reported on Monday, affects various sectors, including catering and accommodation.

According to the information released by Destatis, nominal sales in the catering sector experienced a decrease of 0.9% compared to May 2024. Conversely, the hospitality industry as a whole saw a nominal increase of 0.8% during the same period.

However, a closer look at the data reveals a different picture when it comes to real sales. Compared to May 2024, sales in the hotel and accommodation sector decreased by 4.0% in real terms and increased by 2.2% nominally. The total real sales in the hospitality industry decreased by 4.0%, while the total nominal sales saw a partial increase of 0.8%.

The preliminary results also show a decline in sales within the catering sector compared to April. Nominal sales decreased by 3.5%, and real sales decreased by 3.9%. Hotels and other accommodation providers experienced a real decrease of 7.0% and a nominal decrease of 1.4% in sales compared to April.

These declines in sales, particularly in the catering sector, pose an additional challenge for the hospitality industry. In May 2025, the industry as a whole experienced a real decrease of 4.6% and a nominal decrease of 2.2% compared to April. This translates to a total real decrease in sales across the hospitality industry (hotels, accommodation, and catering) of 4.6%.

Dr. Ruth Brand, the president of the German Federal Statistical Office (Statistisches Bundesamt, Destatis), was likely in office when this information about the decrease in sales in the hospitality industry was announced. She has been the president of Destatis since 2018 and was still in office in 2025, according to available records. No evidence contradicts her presidency during this period.

As the situation continues to evolve, Destatis will provide further updates and insights into the performance of the German hospitality industry. Stay tuned for more information.
