Three years ago, a devastating train derailment occurred in Bavaria, claiming the lives of five individuals and injuring many others. The definitive report on this tragic event by the Federal Bureau of Railway Accident Investigation (BEA) has finally been released on the anniversary of the crash.

The report reveals that dashed maintenance management and internal communication oversights within the railway industry played a critical role in the catastrophic train accident that unfolded in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Some key findings include the oversight of a train driver's report about a predicament at the crash site and insufficient oversight of older sleepers' maintenance.

The BEA heavily criticizes the railway sector's monitoring of railroad sleepers before the incident, particularly for older sleepers. Had they adopted an improved procedure for discovering internal damage to these older sleepers caused by chemical processes, this event might have been prevented.

On June 3, 2022, the day before the Pentecost holidays, a regional train came off the tracks near Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria around midday. Four women and a 13-year-old child died in the crash, and 78 people sustained injuries, some catastrophic. The authorities are still conducting a criminal investigation into the incident, and two railway employees are being charged with negligent homicide and bodily harm, but a trial date has yet to be set.

Initially, the BEA concluded in its interim reports that dilapidated railway sleepers were the primary cause of the accident. This latest report claims that a modified procedure for detecting internal damage in older sleepers could have prevented the disaster.

Since the crash, Deutsche Bahn has initiated various measures to rectify the situation. Over 1.7 million sleepers have been replaced, and the railway has established an expert team to further explore preventative measures for maintaining sleepers.

While regulations for monitoring have been enhanced, the railway now implements stricter criteria for classifying damaged sleepers. The railway extends its condolences to the victims' families and all those impacted by the incident.
