Cyprus Suspends MOT for Vehicles With Faulty Takata Airbags
Cyprus authorities have started suspending roadworthiness certificates (MOT) for vehicles equipped with faulty Takata airbags. This move follows the end of the grace period for replacement, with around 16,900 vehicles still awaiting the fix. Drivers who fail to comply by October 31, 2025, risk fines and penalty points.
The Ministry of Transport has initiated the suspension of MOT for affected vehicles, which pose serious safety risks. Around 20% of the original 81,000 vehicles remain outstanding for airbag replacement. Toyota has about 5,000 vehicles and Honda has about 2,000 vehicles still awaiting replacement.
Drivers should note that the suspension of MOT will not affect those who have booked appointments for the recall by the given deadline. However, driving without a valid MOT carries an on-the-spot fine of €150 for cars and €300 for trucks.
The authorities urge drivers to complete the replacement of faulty Takata airbags promptly to ensure road safety and avoid penalties. The eight-month compliance period was set to address the urgent safety concerns, and drivers who fail to meet the October 31, 2025, deadline will face consequences.
