Customs Service Finds 96 Irregularities in Hotel, Catering Industry Wage Checks

On Friday, September 19, 2025, the Customs Service conducted nationwide inspections in the hotel and catering industry. The Main Customs Office Bielefeld led the operation with 63 officers, focusing on combating black work and ensuring compliance with minimum wage and social security laws.

The inspections, involving 250 employees, uncovered irregularities in 96 cases. The most common issue was minimum wage violations, with 79 instances found. Seven cases involved suspected evasion of social security contributions, and three cases involved illegal employment of foreigners. Twelve administrative offense proceedings and four criminal proceedings were initiated on-site. The general minimum wage, set at 12.82 euros per hour since January 1, 2025, was the main focus of the inspections. The Customs Service chose this sector due to its size and employment intensity under the Minimum Wage Act (MiLoG).
