Customs Seize 70 Breeding Pigeons Over Unpaid Import Duties

Customs officers in Germany have seized a batch of breeding pigeons after the driver failed to pay import duties. The incident occurred at the border, with the birds originally destined for a recipient in Hamburg.

The driver, transporting 53 pigeons from a Swiss breeder in Stühlingen, Germany, and another 17 from the UK in France, was stopped by officials. He claimed the birds were worth only two euros each, but industry standards place their value between 100 and 300 euros per pigeon.

The driver was unable to provide valid import documents or evidence of the birds' value. Consequently, a seizure order was issued, preventing the sale, breeding, or competition of the pigeons until the duties, totalling over 1,800 euros, are paid. The criminal proceedings have been forwarded to the Main Customs Office Karlsruhe for further processing.

The seizure of the breeding pigeons highlights the importance of adhering to customs regulations and providing accurate information regarding the value and origin of goods transported across borders. The Main Customs Office Singen's action serves as a reminder of the strict enforcement of these rules.
