Customs Raid Uncovers Illegal Residence Cases in Germany's Catering and Hotel Industry

On September 19, 2025, the Main Customs Office Kiel conducted a nationwide inspection across multiple cities, focusing on the catering and hotel industry. The operation aimed to combat illegal residence and forged documents, as well as ensure compliance with minimum wage laws and social security obligations. Despite the extensive nature of the inspections, no specific companies or locations targeted in Kiel, Steinberg, Kappeln, Hohwacht, Schönberg, Lübeck, Bad Oldesloe, Trittau, Ahrensburg, Ratzeburg, and Ahrensbök have been publicly disclosed.

The operation involved interviews with 27 employers and 151 employees. As a result, six cases of suspected illegal residence were discovered. One of these cases also involved suspected document forgery. The inspections also looked into potential illegal employment and improper receipt of social benefits. The Main Customs Office Kiel has not released detailed information about the companies or locations involved in this nationwide focus inspection.
