Cost Increase of 5 Euros
In a recent agreement, state transport ministers have reached a consensus on the price for the Germany ticket in 2026. The ticket, which was introduced in 2023, will see a slight increase in cost, rising from the current 59 euros to 63 euros. This represents an 8.6% increase from the current price.
The pricing decision was a topic of agreement among the ministers, following discussions on financing. Despite the price increase, the Germany ticket remains a loss-making business for many regional transport associations. These associations, including major Verkehrsverbünde such as VBB (Berlin-Brandenburg), MVV (Munich), VGN (Nuremberg), VRR (Rhine-Ruhr), VRS (Rhine-Sieg), and others across Germany, receive financial support from the federal government and federal states to finance the German ticket prices in 2025 and 2026. Each year, the federal government and states provide 1.5 billion euros in subsidies for the Germany ticket.
The higher ticket prices are aimed at closing the gap between revenue and losses for the Germany ticket. Transport associations estimate their losses at 3.5 to 3.8 billion euros. The Germany ticket will remain in place for the year 2026, with the federal council still needing to approve the price increase formula.
The decision comes after a point of contention regarding the financing of the Germany ticket. The agreement on the Germany ticket was reached following negotiations on this point. It's important to note that the Germany ticket will be more expensive for approximately 14 million users next year.
The establishment of a formula for future price developments is yet to be announced. The news of the 2026 price increase is a significant development in the ongoing story of the Germany ticket, and we will continue to follow the discussions surrounding its future.
