£4bn Investment in Teesworks Boosts Green Energy Innovation and Job Creation

A transformational project is underway in Teesside, Darlington, and Hartlepool, with the selection of contractors for a £4bn investment in Teesworks. This investment, the single biggest since the Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI), is set to have a profound economic impact on the region [1].

Key among the organisations selected is Liberty Steel, based in Hartlepool. The investment will provide highly-skilled, well-paid jobs and establish Teesside as a world-leading center in the clean, green industries of the future [2].

The project's cornerstone is the development of large-scale renewable energy projects and infrastructure. Teesworks is home to several significant initiatives, including the UK’s largest industrial zone backing a 1GW battery energy storage system (BESS), enhancing grid stability and renewable energy integration [4][5].

One of the flagship projects is Net Zero Teesside (NZT), which aims to create the world's first gas-fired power station with carbon capture and storage capability [3]. NZT and the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) have selected contractors for engineering, procurement, and construction contracts with a combined value of around £4bn.

Through these new contracts, work to clear and prepare the former Redcar Blast Furnace site by Teesworks Ltd for NZT Power will continue, starting in 2023 [6]. This investment is considered a significant opportunity for both the local and UK supply chain [7].

For businesses uncertain about the opportunities in the Tees Valley region, the Business Board is available to provide support and guidance [8]. Teesworks chairman Chris Musgrave stated that this investment is a major milestone and shows the massive impact Teesworks is having on the local economy in terms of jobs and investment [9].

This investment cements Teesside’s leadership role in the UK's green energy transition, including pioneering offshore wind farm developments and innovations in sectors like aviation powered by sustainable fuels [2][3]. In summary, the £4bn investment in Teesworks acts as a catalyst for both innovative green technologies and significant, sustained local job creation, positioning Teesside, Darlington, and Hartlepool as important centers in the UK’s net-zero economy.
