Construction commences on a new transit station in Naugatuck, supervised by CTDOT.
New Naugatuck Train Station to Open in Summer 2027
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is constructing a new train station in Naugatuck, Connecticut, as part of a plan to modernize the Waterbury Branch Line. This $140 million statewide initiative aims to upgrade all six stations on the Metro-North Waterbury Branch Line, including the stations at Waterbury, Naugatuck, Beacon Falls, Seymour, Ansonia, and Derby-Shelton.
The new Naugatuck train station, scheduled to open in summer 2027, is being funded in part by critical investments from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and Gov. Lamont. The project is one of several parts of a larger CTDOT initiative to upgrade all six stations on Metro-North Railroad's Waterbury Branch Line.
The $33.2 million Naugatuck station project is funded by a mix of 80 percent federal funds and 20 percent state funds through state bonds. The new station will be relocated approximately 0.3 miles south of the existing station, closer to downtown Naugatuck.
Key features of the new station include a 350-foot-long, 4,400-square-foot high-level platform with a snow melt system for weather resilience. ADA-compliant elevator access will ensure the station is accessible for all users. The station building will span approximately 2,300 square feet, including a passenger waiting area and ticket vending machines. Real-time arrival and departure information displays will be installed, and the new parking lot will offer electric vehicle charging stations.
Riders will continue using the existing Naugatuck station during most of the construction. Construction work is primarily scheduled during off-peak hours to minimize disruption. A temporary shutdown of the Waterbury Line will occur later in the project with substitute bus service provided.
The new Naugatuck train station will serve as a gateway to a future walkable, mixed-use neighborhood that connects downtown Naugatuck to the east side of the Naugatuck River Greenway. The station is slated for commercial and residential development on a 7.75-acre parcel.
CTDOT Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto thanked Metro-North for their continued partnership on this project and others across the Waterbury Line. The statewide initiative includes expanded accessibility features, improved platform designs, and renovated passenger facilities. The new station is expected to bolster walkable neighborhoods around the station area, enhance connectivity to jobs, and spur downtown redevelopment.
Over the past two years, the Naugatuck train station has served approximately 34,000 riders annually. With the modernization project, the station is poised to serve even more passengers in the years to come, offering a comfortable, accessible, and modern travel experience for all.
