Conservatives Plan Diplomatic 'Revolution' to Boost Business
The Conservative Party has revealed plans to transform the UK's diplomatic service, aiming to align with countries like France and Germany by using ambassadorial roles to support business interests. The party criticises 'crony appointments' under Labour, likely referring to Peter Mandelson's US ambassador role.
Under the Conservatives, British embassies would serve as hubs for businesses to find new markets and promote products. The party plans to send business chiefs as ambassadors, reducing reliance on career civil servants. This move is part of a 'cultural revolution towards commerce'.
MPs would continue to serve as trade envoys under a non-partisan system. The Conservatives accuse Labour of ceding powers to Brussels around tariff-setting and border control. The UK's Foreign Office currently has civil servants working towards Labour's growth mission, a role the Conservatives aim to refocus.
The Conservative Party's policy announcement is one of several due to be revealed during their conference in Manchester. If re-elected, they plan to transform the UK's diplomatic service to better support British businesses abroad. The party believes this will create jobs and boost exports, while also reducing reliance on career civil servants as ambassadors.
