Commencing construction on the expansion of tram line 23, linking northern Munich to the existing network.
Munich, the Bavarian state capital, is set to enhance its public transport network with the extension of tram line 23. The project, which has been under discussion for some years, is now moving forward with significant developments.
The city has allocated 130.5 million euros for the project, with further funding expected to reach around 220 million euros. The total costs for the new construction are estimated at approximately 360 million euros. The necessary construction permits have been secured, and work is set to begin.
The actual construction start for the tram line extension is planned for autumn 2025, with a groundbreaking ceremony marking the beginning of this significant project. Initial works involve laying water and gas pipes in Heidemannstraße to create space for the construction site. These works are expected to continue until mid-2026.
Parallel works are underway on the power and water networks in the area of the Frankfurter Ring. Further work in the area of Maria-Probst-Straße and the Helene-Wessel-Bogen will follow in spring 2026.
The tram line extension will connect Munich's northern districts to the public transport network (ÖPNV), with the new quarter Neufreimann being a significant addition. Line 23 will extend from Schwabing Nord stop to Kieferngarten, providing new connections between Parkstadt Schwabing, Milbertshofen, and Fröttmaning.
Passengers will have the option to switch easily to bus and U-Bahn at the two new endpoints of line 24, which is also planned to provide a cross-connection between Kieferngarten and Am Hart. Some underground facilities of the district heating system will also be rebuilt as part of the project.
