Commencement of Tempelhofer Feld's design contest scheduled for 2024
Berlin to Launch Ideas Competition for Tempelhofer Feld Development
The Berlin state government has announced plans to launch an ideas competition for the possible development of Tempelhofer Feld, a vast open space in the heart of the city, in 2023. The competition, which will be held in 2024, will be accompanied by a citizens' workshop and a broad public participation process.
The citizens' workshop, scheduled to begin in the first half of 2024, will involve up to 500 participants selected from a representative sample of the registration office. The name of the group participating in the workshop has not been disclosed at this time.
The government's decision to revisit the future of Tempelhofer Feld is due to the acute housing shortage since the 2014 referendum. Urban development senator Christian Gaebler has presented a concept for a dialogue process with civil society to explore the land requirements in Berlin and the future role of Tempelhofer Feld in the allocation of uses.
Gaebler is aware of the sensitivity of the issue and emphasizes that the question of a possible change to the ThF Act, which would be necessary if apartments in peripheral areas and social infrastructure were to be built, should be intensively examined from all sides by a representative group of citizens.
CDU faction leader Dirk Stettner stated that the government coalition does not want to lose time on this issue, aiming for the results of the ideas competition to be available by 2024. The results of the competition are expected to be available by the first half of 2025.
The CDU and SPD have repeatedly brought up the idea of a peripheral development of Tempelhofer Feld. The project is justified by the persistent housing shortage and the scarcity of potential building sites for the urgently needed residential quarters.
The citizens' workshop will take place at the former airport building at Tempelhofer before the summer holidays in 2024. The idea competition will involve the evaluation of submitted works with the involvement of the workshop.
The topic of Tempelhofer Feld will continue to be a focus for the Berlin government coalition and the people of Berlin in the coming years. More articles on similar projects can be found online. The results of the dialogue process will be available in the first half of 2025.
