Collaborative Effort of Renault Group, Volvo Group, and CMA CGM: Developing a New Line of Electric Vans to Address the Increasing Demand for Green and Efficient Logistics Solutions
New Joint Venture Announced: Pioneering Electric Van Development
A groundbreaking collaboration has been announced, as Renault Group, Volvo Group, and CMA CGM Group join forces to create a new company dedicated to revolutionizing the electric van market. The new company, based in New York, is expected to begin operating at the beginning of 2024, subject to regulatory approval processes.
The joint venture aims to combine the agility of a startup with the support of its industrial leader partners. Renault Group, a global leader in light commercial vehicles and an innovative leader in electric vehicles, will bring its expertise to develop and mass-produce the electric platform integrating the SDV architecture. Volvo Group, a global leader in trucks with a solid customer base of logistics companies and a national service network, will contribute its extensive knowledge in the field. CMA CGM, a world leader in shipping and logistics, will help build solutions for all transport and supply chain actors.
The new company's flagship product will be the Software-Defined Vehicles (SDV) range, set to launch in 2026. The SDV will offer exceptional compactness for urban mobility, high versatility for customized solutions, and different battery capacities, including an 800V version, unprecedented for a light commercial vehicle. This cutting-edge technology will enable vehicles to be updated throughout their lifespan, thanks to connected services related to SDV technology.
The SDV's new electronic architecture will enable unprecedented functions to monitor delivery activities and commercial performance, potentially reducing total cost of use by 30% for logistics actors. This advancement is made possible by the solid economic model the new company will rely on, thanks to optimized resource allocation based on the area of excellence of each partner.
Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of CMA CGM Group, expressed pride in partnering with Renault Group and Volvo Group and commitment to decarbonizing the company's activity and industry. Martin Lundstedt, President and CEO of Volvo Group, shared similar sentiments, expressing enthusiasm for the new company's potential to offer complete transport solutions for decarbonization. Luca de Meo, CEO of Renault Group, expressed excitement about leading the transformation of the commercial vehicle market and the potential of the new venture.
This collaboration is not the first between Renault Group and Volvo Group, as they have a history of over 35 years of working together on light commercial vehicles. Volvo Group, through its Renault Trucks division, and Renault Group have been distributing Renault Master and Trafic light commercial vehicles in both networks.
The companies Daimler Truck AG, Volvo Group, and Traton SE have also joined forces to develop a new generation of electric trucks for the logistics sector under a planned joint venture named "Motional" or a similar collaborative entity. While the exact name of the new company is not yet confirmed, these companies are known leaders in this area and have formed partnerships for electric truck development.
This joint venture marks a significant step forward in the electrification of the commercial vehicle industry, with the potential to reduce carbon emissions and offer more efficient, cost-effective, and customizable solutions for logistics actors worldwide.
