First Gig
My first slice of the pie was at Sports Division, a clothing store in Manchester city center. Granted, it was as dull as watching a snail race, but it paid £2.32 an hour – a bit above the minimum wage!
City Debut
Kicking off my City life was as an actuarial graduate at AON Consulting, focusing on pension scheme liabilities. Soon, I realized this path wasn't the right fit, so I took a punt and asked my superior for a switch to the investment division. Two months later, I was immersed in the CFA curriculum, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Career Highlights
A quick recap of my gambling career in finance: post-university, I landed at AON Consulting, then moved to Merrill Lynch, Aviva Investors, and finally LGIM, where I stayed for a decade before joining St. James's Place as their Chief Investment Officer. I couldn't ask for a more perfect fit given my expertise in multi-asset strategies.
City Marvels and Shortcomings
Ah, the City – its architectural heritage is a sight to behold, and when the sun's out, it makes you acutely aware of how fortunate we are. The one thing I'd change? The chill factor. Outsiders might not notice, but the City is infamous for being more frigid than a polar bear's tear!
Standout Meals
One of my unforgettable dining experiences was dinner alongside Gordon Brown – a fascinating conversation, indeed. But the meal that still gives me goosebumps was the celebration lunch after passing our first actuarial exams at AON. The camaraderie was palpable – a reminder of the importance of recognition in fostering team spirit.
Blunders and Lessons
I've had my fair share of bloopers, such as flubbing chairing a senior meeting due to poor preparation or bungling a 15-minute presentation in front of CEOs. However, these slip-ups have taught me that failure isn't the end but the beginning of resilience.
Proudest Moment
Becoming a father of two. Nothing gives me a greater sense of accomplishment, or pushes me harder, than knowing I'm setting an example for my kids and striving to create a prosperous life for them.
Role Models
Three key figures inspire me: my badass mum, who instilled grit and the value of constant learning in me; my grandmother, the cornerstone of family unity; and Sir Alex Ferguson, the legend who knew how to bring out the best in his squad.
Key Business Advice
I've been given two golden nuggets of wisdom:
- "I back you." Hearing this from my former boss, Yoram Lustig, gave me the boost I needed when I doubted myself. As a leader, I try to instill that same belief in my team.
- My home economics teacher told me I'd never excel in a professional field; her words stung back then, but they served as a reminder that sometimes, teachers can get things wrong. Instead, I discovered my true calling in the realm of finance.
Take the City for a Spin
If I were entertaining you to a lunchtime feast, The Wolseley in The City or Piccadilly would be my choice. And what about an after-work Tipple? The Globe in Moorgate is a top spot for soaking up the rays on a sunny day.
Weekday Abode
Norbury, SW16
Weekend Hangout
Old Trafford – The Theatre of Dreams, baby! It's my basket of joy.
Two Weeks of Bliss
Tenerife with the spouse and kids – the same resort for the past seven years. The "fun in the sun" vibe, fabulous pools, and brilliant kids' club make it our ultimate pick. Fun fact: Dubai is also on my bucket list – the office there has a side benefit of tagging on a few days for good measure!
