Chairman Wontumi Facing Illegal Mining Charges Placed on Travel Ban

Chairman Wontumi, whose real name is Bernard Antwi-Bosiako, has been placed on a travel ban by the Accra High Court. The court ordered this directive as part of his bail conditions, effective October 7, 2025. He is facing six criminal charges related to illegal mining involving him and his company, Akonta Mining Limited.

The court granted him bail in the sum of GH¢1 million, pending the commencement of his trial. He has been charged alongside his company and one Kwame Antwi, who is identified as the company's director. However, there is no reliable information in classical news sources or official corporate registers confirming a 'Kwame Antwi' as a director in connection with Chairman Wontumi or Akonta Mining Limited. Chairman Wontumi is a prominent politician of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ghana and an entrepreneur, particularly in the mining sector. Akonta Mining Limited, a Ghanaian mining company, has been in the spotlight in recent years due to illegal mining activities in protected areas. Despite the allegations, Chairman Wontumi is not officially listed as a director of the company.

Chairman Wontumi is not permitted to travel until the case against him is concluded. The court's decision highlights the seriousness of the charges against him and his company. As the trial progresses, more details about the alleged illegal mining activities are expected to emerge.
