Centrica Joins Forces with 2G on Partnership for Hydrogen-Compatible Combined Heat and Power System

In a significant move towards a greener future, Centrica Business Solutions has announced a partnership with 2G Energy AG to provide customers with 100% hydrogen-ready Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems. This partnership, announced on January 30, 2023, is a response to the growing need for integrated hydrogen solutions in the UK.

The new partnership aims to provide Centrica's customers with efficient and hydrogen-ready CHP systems, helping them in their journey towards Net Zero. 2G Energy AG, a global leader in biogas and renewable CHP technology, brings its expertise to the table, ensuring the partnership delivers on its promises.

Meanwhile, Centrica Business Solutions is also partnering with other entities to drive the hydrogen economy. For instance, the company is working with Ryze Hydrogen to jointly build and operate hydrogen production facilities aimed at the industrial and transport sector. However, it's worth noting that this partnership does not seem to expand Centrica's geographical coverage beyond the UK, Ireland, Netherlands, and Italy.

In another development, Centrica has announced plans with HiiROC to inject 'emerald' hydrogen into the peaking plant at Brigg. This move is part of Centrica's broader strategy to decarbonise its energy infrastructure.

The partnership with 2G Energy AG is also seen as a testament to 2G's international technology leadership. Frank Grewe, 2G's Chief Technical Officer, has highlighted the efficiency of 2G's CHP solutions, stating that they are highly efficient and hydrogen-ready.

As the hydrogen network develops, the highly efficient units can continue to run on traditional fuel sources, helping future-proof investments. This flexibility is a key advantage of the partnership, as it allows for a smooth transition to hydrogen without the need for immediate and costly infrastructure overhauls.

Greg McKenna, Managing Director of Centrica Business Solutions, stated that the partnership strengthens the range of technologies they offer for decarbonisation. He emphasised that their customers are fully focused on Net Zero and this partnership will help them achieve their goals.

Centrica Business Solutions will offer 2G CHPs across the UK & Ireland, Netherlands, and Italy. This expansion is expected to increase the adoption of hydrogen-ready CHP systems, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.

In addition to the partnership with 2G Energy AG, Centrica is also working with Equinor to build a low-carbon hydrogen production hub at Easington in East Yorkshire. This hub is part of Equinor's ambition to become a leading player in the hydrogen economy.

In conclusion, the partnership between Centrica and 2G Energy AG is a significant step forward in the UK's quest for integrated hydrogen solutions. The partnership will provide Centrica's customers with efficient and hydrogen-ready CHP systems, helping them reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future.
