"Celebrating Half a Century: a Look at Our Banking Logo's Evolution"

The history of the Commerzbank logo, a German banking institution established in 1870, is a testament to its growth and adaptability over the years. From simple textual abbreviations to a dynamic emblem with symbolic elements, the logo has evolved to reflect modernization, corporate growth, and a commitment to innovation and customer engagement.

In the early days, before 1974, the company name appeared in various fonts within documents, with no permanent logo. However, in 1937, the letters 'DB' were adopted as the bank's logo, often paired with the imperial eagle. This logo was frequently confused with state institutions, leading to the need for a more distinctive identity.

The turning point came in 1972 when Commerzbank launched a competition to design a new logo. The winning design, named 'Signpost' by the bank's employees, was created by Anton Stankowski, a renowned Stuttgart-based graphic designer. The logo, first presented at the annual media conference on April 2, 1974, features a slash symbolizing growth and a square-shaped frame standing for security and stability. The colour blue in the logo represents trust.

Anton Stankowski's work includes numerous logos, iconographic symbols, and designs that have retained their visual power. His creation for Commerzbank is considered his most famous work worldwide. The angle of the slash in the logo is 53 degrees, and the tips of the oblique beam are aligned with the inner corners of the square on the top right and bottom left.

The new logo was publicly unveiled in an advertisement on April 25, 1974, with the largest letters measuring 5 meters high, and the logo measuring 8.46 meters. Fast forward to 2020, the largest brand advertisement for Commerzbank was installed on the roof of Eintracht Frankfurt's home ground, measuring an impressive 73 meters long and illuminated with over 25,000 LEDs.

Commerzbank's logo and brand identity have been further elevated through sponsorships, such as naming the Waldstadion as 'Commerzbank Arena,' and partnerships with German national football teams, associating the brand with national pride and sports excellence.

Although detailed information on the precise graphic design process or the creators of each logo iteration is scarce, the significance of symbolic elements like Mercury wings and the wind rose highlights the bank’s emphasis on commerce, communication, and navigation through its visual identity.
