California's electric vehicle (EV) industry dreams big this week

In the world of automotive innovation, electric vehicles (EVs) are making a significant impact. Here's a roundup of the latest news from the industry, focusing on the development of electric sports cars and vans.

GM's Electric Sports Car Vision: The California Corvette Concept

General Motors (GM) has been exploring the possibilities of an all-electric Corvette, as demonstrated by the California Corvette concept. This design study, unveiled by GM's Advanced Design studio, is a glimpse into the future of Corvette design in an electric era. However, it's essential to note that the California Corvette concept is not intended for production, serving instead as a styling and technology preview.

The California Corvette concept leverages the packaging flexibility of electric powertrains to improve performance. It features a T-shaped battery pack, a carbon-fiber monocoque, and mid-engine proportions that echo Corvette DNA. The concept also showcases design elements that could appear on a future EV Corvette, such as a single-piece, front-hinged canopy, a low, wide stance, and active aero elements.

Faraday Future's FX Super One: A Rival to the Cadillac Escalade

Faraday Future, a company that has faced financial challenges during the production process of its FF91 electric SUV, has launched low-volume production of the FF91. The company has also unveiled a new design for its electric vehicle, the FX Super One, which is actually a Chinese-market Great Wall Motors Wey Gaoshan with a screen attached. The FX Super One is an electric minivan, pitched as a rival to the Cadillac Escalade.

The screen attached to the front of the FX Super One is called the "Super EAI F.A.C.E. (Front AI Communication Ecosystem) System." It features four-seat configurations with suspended zero-gravity seats, complete with heating, ventilation, and 10-way massage.

QuantumScape and Volkswagen's Solid-State Battery Collaboration

QuantumScape, a solid-state battery developer, and Volkswagen have announced an expansion of their agreement. This allows PowerCo, a joint venture between QuantumScape and Volkswagen, to become actively involved in pilot production of solid-state batteries earlier. QuantumScape claims this will help it scale manufacturing more quickly.

Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz has begun public testing of an EQS sedan with prototype solid-state batteries and expects to bring an EV powered by solid-state batteries to production "before the end of the decade."

GM's Minimised Drag Strategy for EV Range Maximisation

Minimising drag is crucial to maximising EV range, making a design like the California Corvette potentially beneficial for an electric sports car. The California Corvette's underbody tunnels are designed to channel air more efficiently around the vehicle, generating downforce for better grip without aerodynamic drag.

GM is also focusing on this strategy, tasking its designers to imagine what a future all-electric Corvette could look like. However, as of July 2025, there is no production all-electric Corvette based on the C8; GM has shown concept EV designs (including the California Corvette concept) that explore an electric future for Corvette, but GM says those concepts are not intended for production, and no C8-based BEV has been announced for sale or confirmed in GM’s public product plans.

Mercedes-Benz's Luxurious Electric Van: The Vision V

On a different note, Mercedes-Benz unveiled its Vision V concept, a luxurious van expected to debut within the next year or so. This addition to Mercedes-Benz's lineup further solidifies the company's commitment to electric vehicles.

Stay tuned for more updates as these companies continue to push the boundaries of what's possible in the electric vehicle industry.
