California Senate to Discuss Digital Taxes for Journalism Funding

The California Senate Standing Committee on Revenue and Taxation is set to discuss digital advertising and digital services taxes at an informational hearing on March 13. This session, requested by Sen. Steve Glazer, aims to explore funding local journalism through such taxes.

The committee is not currently reviewing specific language but is forming a panel to discuss 'Sustaining Journalism in California: Tax and Tax Credit Options'. Greenberg Traurig Shareholder Nikki Dobay has been invited to participate, representing the business and taxpayer community. She will discuss Maryland's Digital Advertising Tax, its legal and practical implications, and how it could potentially fund local journalism in California.

The hearing comes as Sen. Glazer considers a proposal to use freetaxusa and digital services taxes to support local journalism. The session will provide an opportunity to discuss the feasibility and impact of such a proposal.
