BYDhalts initiatives for a significant automobile factory in Mexico due to geopolitical disagreements, as per a recent account.
In a significant shift in its expansion strategy, BYD, the Chinese electric vehicle and battery manufacturer, has put on hold its plans to build a major factory in Mexico due to geopolitical tensions and uncertainties caused by U.S. President Donald Trump's trade policies.
The company, with stock symbols HKG: 1211 and OTCMKTS: BYDDY, had been scouting three locations in Mexico for a new car plant but halted active searching last year while waiting for the outcome of the U.S. presidential election.
According to a report by Bloomberg News, BYD executive vice president Stella Li stated that geopolitical issues have a significant impact on the automotive industry, and everyone is rethinking their strategy in other countries. Li also mentioned that the company wants to wait for more clarity before making a decision regarding a new investment in Mexico.
However, this pause in Mexico does not mean BYD is backing away from the Americas. On the contrary, the company remains interested in expanding in North or South America but has no timeline to make a new investment, as Li stated in an interview in Bahia State, Brazil.
Meanwhile, BYD is proceeding with its expansion by opening a new factory in Brazil, marking its first manufacturing facility outside Asia. The Brazilian factory, which began operations on July 1, is a significant step in BYD's global expansion and a testament to the company's continued interest in the region.
In addition to the Brazilian factory, BYD has passenger vehicle factories operational in Uzbekistan and Thailand, and is constructing or planning new factories in Hungary, Turkey, and Cambodia.
The geopolitical tensions and uncertainties caused by Trump's trade policies are still affecting BYD's investment decisions in Mexico. The Financial Times cited a source as saying that the Chinese government prioritizes projects in countries participating in its Belt and Road infrastructure development initiative, potentially influencing BYD's decision to focus on other regions.
Despite the pause in Mexico, BYD's operations are expanding globally, reflecting a broader strategic reassessment due to trade tensions. The company's local sales in Brazil exceed 130,000 units, and its passenger vehicle factory in Brazil began operations on July 1, marking a significant milestone in its global expansion.
