Doggone It, Anglo American's Digging Deeper in Southern Lower Saxony!

Firm broadens hunt for raw materials in the southern region of Lower Saxony - Business broadens its exploration of natural resources in the southern region of Lower Saxony

Here's some coal for ya: Anglo American Exploration Germany is crankin' up operations in the southern part of Lower Saxony. Instead of just diggin' for metals, they're now hunting for salts too, given the green light by the Lower Saxony Mining Authority LBEG. The lads are eyeing up rock and potash salts, for starters.

Picture this: an expansive 1,961 square kilometer area called Leine-Salt, nestled in the western Harz foothills. It's situated south of Salzgitter and Hildesheim, and north of Göttingen, boasting towns like Einbeck, Seesen, and Herzberg am Harz.

You guessed it; they're already mining for copper, lead, gold, and silver underground in this region. When it comes to drilling, they deploy a georadar-equipped plane taking off from Hildesheim, with a permit valid till the end of 2028, just like the one for salt hunting.

Mining on the brain, they're also drilling in Thuringia, with test drillings already underway. Should they find an economic amount of those raw materials, they'd need another permit in a heartbeat.

Scientists have been snooping around a bit east in the Upper Harz, experimenting with a new measurement technique. So far, those experts say, there might still be some rare ores lurking in the Harz underground.

The Harz is the OG of European mining regions, with mining activities dating back a smidgen over 3,000 years holy smokes! They used to mine silver, copper, lead, and zinc on a huge scale, but production dwindled in the 19th and 20th centuries, with the last mine shutting its doors in 2007.

As for Lower Saxony, we haven't found anything in our searches regarding mining exploration or permits for salts and metals in southern Lower Saxony. If you want the lowdown on mining projects in this region, it's best to check in with the official channels of the Lower Saxony Ministry for Economic Affairs or the State Geological Survey. Keep your shovels sharp and pewter mugs ready, folks! This could be the start of a new gold rush!

  1. Anglo American's operations in southern Lower Saxony now include the exploration for salts, in addition to metals, granted permission by the Lower Saxony Mining Authority (LBEG).
  2. The mining area, Leine-Salt, located near Hildesheim, is where Anglo American is planning to extract rock and potash salts among other minerals like copper, lead, gold, and silver.
  3. In addition to their operations in southern Lower Saxony, Anglo American is also investigating possible raw material deposits in Thuringia.
  4. The possibility of finding rare ores in the Harz region, which has a vast mining history dating back over 3,000 years, is under theoretical exploration by scientists.
