Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway Holdings, Valued at $301 Billion, Has $74 Billion Invested in Two Preeminent Artificial Intelligence (AI) Shares

Financial genius Warren Buffett, also known as the "Oracle of Omaha," has a reputation for delivering extraordinary returns. With a staggering return of over 5,700,000% for Berkshire Hathaway's Class A shareholders since the 60s, his investment strategies are closely followed on Wall Street.

However, Buffett isn't typically associated with chasing the hottest tech trends. Instead, his portfolio predominantly includes financial stocks and consumer staples. Yet, astonishingly, Berkshire Hathaway's massive $301 billion portfolio, managed by Warren Buffett, is investing a substantial $74 billion in two leading artificial intelligence (AI) stocks.

Apple: $71.5 billion

Although many companies, like longtime Berkshire holdings Coca-Cola and Domino's Pizza, leverage AI in some capacity, few rely as heavily on AI as Apple for future growth. Apple's growth prospects depend on its Apple Intelligence, an AI-driven model that aids in text and image understanding, creation, and summarization. With iPhone sales stagnant in the last two fiscal years and MAC and iPad sales struggling post-pandemic, Apple Intelligence is crucial for boosting the perceived value of physical products and re-igniting sales growth.

Apple's capital-return program, which includes repurchasing $725 billion of its stock and reducing outstanding shares by almost 43%, further captivates Buffett. This has fueled impressive earnings per share (EPS) growth and a surge in its share price.

Amazon: $2.4 billion

The second prominent AI stock Berkshire Hathaway has heavily invested in is Amazon. Buffett's appreciation for consumer staple stocks can be seen in Amazon's e-commerce dominance, accounting for almost 40% of US online retail sales as of 2024. However, Amazon's real growth engine is Amazon Web Services (AWS), its burgeoning cloud infrastructure service platform. AI has the potential to accelerate growth for AWS and reinforce its core of operating income.

Amazon is also leveraging advertising services and subscription services to augment its rapid ascent. With its entry into exclusive sports events and NBA game streaming, Amazon is poised to become a dominant advertising platform, complementing its burgeoning ad-pricing power.

Though AI wasn't a driving factor behind Berkshire Hathaway's initial Amazon investment six years ago, it now forms an integral part of Amazon's growth plans.
