Braunschweig Residents Face Utility Bill Hikes in November
Braunschweig residents can expect changes in their utility bills. The council is set to vote on November 4 on increases in sewage and stormwater charges, along with adjustments to waste disposal and street cleaning fees.
Sewage charges will rise by 8 percent, primarily due to extensive investments in the city's sewage pipe infrastructure. This responsibility lies with the municipal authorities, as German municipalities oversee local wastewater infrastructure. The increase also stems from general price hikes, higher membership fees to the Abwasserverband Braunschweig (AVB), and significant sewer network upgrades.
Stormwater charges will increase by 4.3 percent. Meanwhile, street cleaning fees will decrease by 3.7 percent, thanks to efficiency gains by ALBA Braunschweig GmbH. Residual and organic waste container fees are proposed to increase by 2.5 percent, driven by higher costs for thermal waste treatment and an elevated CO2 tax.
The council will decide on these fee changes on November 4. Residents should prepare for adjustments in their utility bills, with sewage and stormwater charges increasing, while street cleaning fees decrease. The changes aim to balance costs and maintain essential services.
