**Retro Wagons and Modern Concepts: A Look Back and Forward**

The automotive industry has a rich history of iconic wagons, some of which have left lasting impressions on car enthusiasts. From the 1974 Chrysler Town & Country, large enough to transport a 4' x 8' sheet of plywood, to the 1985 AMC Eagle range, which included a wagon with woodgrain panels, the crossover concept was prevalent decades before it became commonplace.

One such example is the 1971 Pontiac Grand Safari, designed by Bill Mitchell and becoming one of the longest General Motors cars ever built. Its successor, the 1977 Pontiac Astre Safari, offered a premium interior experience compared to the Chevrolet Vega Estate Wagon.

In the 1980s, wagons like the 1981 Dodge Aries, the 1985 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Estate, and the 1984 Dodge Caravan, with their vinyl woodgrain exterior panelling, attracted many buyers. The 1982 Mercury Cougar Villager and the 1988 Ford LTD Crown Victoria Country Squire were also popular choices, offering a touch of luxury with their woodgrain trim.

Fast forward to the 21st century, and the trend for retro-inspired wagons continues. The 2009 Ford Flex, with its horizontal grooves reminiscent of classic woodie wagons, and the 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser Woodie Package, with its faux woodgrain panels, have both been well-received by consumers.

Recently, BMW has unveiled the Concept Speedtop, a shooting brake-style vehicle, at the Villa d'Este concours event in Italy. Based on the M8 grand tourer, the Speedtop features a powerful V8 engine and a hatchback opening at the rear. It is a limited-edition vehicle, with only 70 cars to be made and a price of around £500,000. The Speedtop's interior is inspired by the M8, with a dashboard featuring traditional dials and buttons, and a two-tone colour combination throughout the cabin. Extra space is found where the rear seats would usually be, and customers can order a bespoke leather luggage set from Italian manufacturer, Schedoni.

The Speedtop's ultra-fine LED headlights flank an illuminated kidney grille, and it is powered by the twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 engine from the M8 Competition, producing at least 625hp and 553lb ft of torque. This electric-powered concept car represents BMW's exploration of new design themes and technologies, while honouring its rich heritage.

While these retro-inspired wagons and modern concepts may cater to different tastes, they all share a common thread: a focus on combining style, luxury, and practicality in one package. Whether it's the spaciousness of the 1974 Chrysler Town & Country or the sleek design of the BMW Concept Speedtop, these vehicles have left and continue to leave a lasting impression on the automotive industry.
