Biden to Reassess U.S.-Saudi Arabia Ties After Oil Cut
The U.S.-Saudi Arabia partnership, established post-World War II, has weathered numerous storms. President Biden is now set to reassess this relationship following Saudi Arabia's recent oil production cut with Russia, a move seen as a snub to the U.S.
Saudi Arabia's decision to reduce oil output by two million barrels a day, alongside Russia and other OPEC+ nations, has sparked controversy. The move, defended by Saudi Arabia as necessary to maintain a stable oil market, comes at a sensitive time for Biden's Democratic party, with midterm elections looming and rising consumer prices a key Republican criticism.
The U.S. has long supported Saudi Arabia, but the relationship has been strained by various challenges. Recently, Senator Bob Menendez called for halting all U.S. cooperation with Saudi Arabia, including arms sales, due to the kingdom's perceived support for Russia's war in Ukraine. However, no government representatives have publicly proposed changing the U.S.-Saudi relationship following the oil production cut.
President Biden is now ready to work with Congress to reassess the U.S.-Saudi relationship, according to U.S. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby. This comes after Biden's visit to Saudi Arabia in July, where he met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Despite this, the U.S. State Department announced in August that Saudi Arabia would acquire 300 Patriot MIM-104E missile systems from the U.S.
The U.S.-Saudi Arabia partnership, strengthened by Biden's predecessor, Trump, is now under review by Biden. The recent oil production cut, seen as a snub to the U.S., and Saudi Arabia's perceived support for Russia's war in Ukraine have led to calls for reassessing the relationship. The outcome of this review could significantly impact the future of U.S.-Saudi Arabia ties.
