Berlin's Giffey Shifts Solar Focus to Large-Scale Installations for 2035 Goal
Berlin's Senator for the Economy, Franziska Giffey, has reviewed the mandatory solar panel installation policy positively. Since 2023, the number of solar installations has surged, now accounting for 5.6% of the city's electricity generation. However, to reach the goal of 25% solar energy by 2035, Giffey plans to shift focus from balcony panels to high-performance large-scale installations.
Berlin aims to boost its solar energy share to 25% by 2035, requiring a significant increase from the current 460 megawatt-peak to 4,400. Since 2023, the city has seen a remarkable rise in solar installations, from 15,000 to over 53,000, thanks to the solar mandate. Giffey has praised this progress but plans to discontinue funding for balcony solar panels, instead prioritizing large-scale installations owned by companies and property owners.
The recent power outage in southwest Berlin may have sparked further interest in solar energy. Giffey sees potential in large-scale solar panels to help achieve the city's climate-neutral goal by 2045. The draft state budget for 2026/2027 allocates 10 million euros annually for the solar funding program.
Berlin's solar energy expansion is on track, with over 53,000 installations and a 5.6% share in electricity generation. To meet the 2035 target, Giffey plans to focus on large-scale solar panels, discontinuing balcony panel funding. The city's commitment to solar energy is a key step towards its climate-neutral goal by 2045.
