The new monthly price, set at 27.50 euros, marks a substantial increase from the current rate. This follows an earlier rise of 111% in April 2025, which has drawn criticism from opposition parties. Left politicians Katina Schubert and Kristian Ronneburg, along with Green faction leader Werner Graf, have joined forces to prevent the impending price surge.

Social Senator Cansel Kiziltepe (SPD) has expressed a desire to maintain the social security ticket as a voluntary service in 2026, despite financial pressures. However, the SPD's majority in the Berlin state parliament may face a test as the Left and Greens push for a reversal of the price increase.
