Belgium Boosts Air Defense with $567M Purchase of Advanced AIM-9X Sidewinder Missiles

Belgium is set to enhance its air defence capabilities with a significant acquisition of advanced AIM-9X Sidewinder air-to-air missiles. The deal, valued at up to $567.8 million, has been approved by the U.S. State Department and will see Belgium acquire these missiles for its F-35 fleet, supporting NATO's defence mission.

The package includes up to 320 AIM-9X Block II and 258 AIM-9X Block II+ missiles, along with missile containers, weapons software, and comprehensive support services. These missiles, produced by Raytheon Technologies Corporation, are renowned for their advanced infrared-visor and data-link technologies, designed for short-range engagements. The sale will not disrupt the regional military balance and will be supported by a small number of U.S. personnel and contractors for programme oversight.

Belgium's acquisition aligns with U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives, enhancing the security of a key NATO ally. The missiles will be easily integrated into Belgium's F-35 fleet, providing modern air-to-air weapons and ensuring readiness for defence missions.

The approved sale will see Belgium receive 50 AIM-9X Block II and 30 AIM-9X Block II+ tactical guidance units, with no adverse impact on U.S. defence readiness. RTX Corporation, based in Arlington, Virginia, will serve as the principal contractor for this deal, further strengthening the defence partnership between the U.S. and Belgium.
