Austria's EU Funding to Rise, But So Will Costs
Austria's relationship with the European Union (EU) is set to see significant changes in the coming years, with both increased funding and potential costs on the horizon. The country is currently a net payer, contributing more to the EU than it receives.
In 2024, Austria's gross contribution to the EU is projected to rise from 3.3 billion euros to 4.4 billion euros by 2026. Despite this, Austria is expected to receive substantial funds. Agriculture, for instance, will receive over one billion euros in 2024. EU inflows to Austria are also increasing, with projections of 3.9 billion euros in 2025 and 2.1 billion euros in 2026.
Austria has benefited from the EU's Corona Recovery Fund, receiving over one billion euros since 2021. However, the country also faces repayment costs. It pays about 640 million euros annually as its share of the repayment costs for the EU's Corona recovery debt until 2058. The EU Commission's plan to use 24 billion euros from the common budget each year to repay Corona debts would add an additional burden of 640 million euros per year for Austria.
Research in Austria is also set to receive significant EU funding. The EU's 'Horizon Europe' program will provide 312 million euros to Austria in 2024. Austria is expected to contribute around 3.5 billion euros to the EU in 2025.
A study by the Institute for Economic Research (WIFO) warns of the potential costs of an 'Oexit'. It estimates that Austria could lose between 24 and 47 billion euros annually if it were to leave the EU.
Austria's financial relationship with the EU is complex and multifaceted. While the country contributes significantly to the EU budget, it also receives substantial funding, particularly for agriculture and research. However, the country also faces significant repayment costs for EU debt. The potential costs of leaving the EU, as highlighted by the WIFO study, underscore the importance of Austria's continued engagement with the EU.
