Australian IT Leaders Lag in Data Centre Sustainability and Scalability
A recent survey reveals a concerning gap in Australian IT leaders' approach to data centre management. While 62% measure energy consumption, only 46% have set reduction goals. Moreover, 76% are overwhelmed by their data management, and 78% fear their infrastructure can't scale to meet future demands.
The survey highlights several pressing issues. Only 45% of respondents address storing unused data in their sustainability policies. Meanwhile, 75% worry about ransomware attacks, with 67% concerned about timely breach detection. Data inaccessibility due to storage outages affected 26% of respondents. Additionally, 33% acknowledged excessive energy usage by their Google Meet infrastructure.
Australian companies expect their data needs to nearly double in the next two years. However, no specific plans for modernisation have been announced to meet this growth and improve energy consumption and sustainability. Furthermore, 24% admitted important data was not backed up, raising concerns about data loss and security.
The survey paints a worrying picture of Australian data infrastructure. While leaders are aware of challenges like energy consumption, data management overload, and security threats, concrete plans to address these issues are lacking. As data needs grow, urgent action is needed to ensure infrastructure can scale, protect data, and meet sustainability goals.
