"At CES, Hyundai Mobis demonstrates MOBION, featuring an e-Corner system for lateral and diagonal motion as well as pivots"

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024, Hyundai Mobis, a leading automotive parts supplier, unveiled an innovative electric vehicle named MOBION. Equipped with the next-generation 'e-Corner System' motion technology, MOBION promises to redefine the future of transportation.

The e-Corner System, responsible for MOBION's dynamic movements, comprises four key technologies. Each wheel in Mobis' In-Wheel technology generates its own power independently, providing the vehicle with exceptional maneuverability. This innovation places four small motors inside each wheel, a first in the automotive industry.

One of the standout features of MOBION is its ability to move laterally, diagonally, and perform stationary pivot turns. This groundbreaking mobility is made possible by MOBION's four wheels, which are individually controlled for such movements.

To ensure safety, MOBIS has introduced a new "Exterior Lighting" lamp on the front bumper. This lamp conveys safety information with the assistance of a short-distance lidar recognizing pedestrians. During an intersection, for instance, the LED on the front bumper displays the direction in which a pedestrian is crossing the street. The rear bumper can also alert drivers against changing lanes or passing when a pedestrian is detected.

For autonomous driving, MOBION features three light detection and ranging (lidar) devices. Two of these are near the headlamps, while one is centrally located on the front bumper. The short-distance lidars near the headlamps are complemented by a long-distance lidar at the center, enhancing lateral movement and object recognition during maneuvers.

Hyundai Mobis successfully conducted on-road tests of the e-Corner System's driving capabilities in 2023. The company aims to make the technologies underpinning MOBION both accessible and tangible by unveiling a functional demonstration car at CES, as opposed to a mere conceptual announcement.

Vice President Lee Seung-Hwan stated that MOBION embodies Hyundai Mobis' core technologies ready for mass production. At CES, Mobis showcased its "Ground Projection" function, which illuminates the vehicle's direction of travel during diagonal or lateral movement. During diagonal or lateral movement, Ground Projection can generate crosswalk stripes for pedestrians to use when detected.

The name MOBION is a compound word formed by combining "Mobis" and the English word "on," reflecting Mobis' commitment to electrification of passenger vehicles. With MOBION, Hyundai Mobis is taking a significant step towards a more sustainable and safer future.
