Asia-Pacific Dominates Global Energy Imports, Russia a Key Supplier

The Asia-Pacific region is the dominant destination for global oil, coal, and gas imports. Meanwhile, the Middle East, America, and the CIS serve as the primary export hubs for these energy sources.

In 2023, Russia played a significant role in Asia-Pacific's energy supply, exporting vast volumes of oil and gas. The Eastern Siberia–Pacific Ocean pipeline, for instance, transported approximately 630,000 barrels of oil daily to China by early 2025. The Middle East also heavily relied on the Asia-Pacific region for its oil and gas exports, with three-quarters of its shipments heading eastward.

Oil, coal, and gas accounted for around four-fifths of the world's primary energy consumption in 2023. Notably, nearly half of this energy was traded internationally. Europe's energy imports, however, primarily originate from within its own region, with intra-regional trade being more significant than trade with other continents.

The Asia-Pacific region's dominance in energy imports, coupled with the Middle East and CIS's significant export roles, underscores the global energy market's complex dynamics. Russia's substantial contribution to Asia-Pacific's energy supply, particularly via the Eastern Siberia–Pacific Ocean pipeline, further highlights the strategic importance of these energy corridors.
