Interstate 81 Redevelopment: Downtown Syracuse Transforms into Business Loop 81

Downtown Syracuse is witnessing a significant transformation as the Interstate 81 viaduct is being replaced by the new Business Loop 81. The first step in this phased redevelopment is the digging along the former Renwick Avenue, as the state transportation department begins to dismantle the elevated Interstate 81[1][2].

The construction of Business Loop 81 is a crucial part of the project, with the major construction already well underway in 2025. The entire I-81 Viaduct Project is expected to be completed by 2028[3]. The City of Syracuse’s Community Grid Vision Plan provides a long-term framework to maximize the positive impacts of this redevelopment in the downtown area[4].

The new Business Loop 81 will replace the current elevated section of Interstate 81, extending from East Colvin Street to Burt Street. This transformation includes the creation of a new roundabout at Van Buren Street and a new northbound exit at East Colvin Street as part of Contract 5 construction phase[1][2].

The restructuring of Interstate 81 will result in traffic being sent to street level, as the elevated portion of the highway is being torn down. This change is expected to bring about a more pedestrian-friendly environment in downtown Syracuse[2].

However, the construction has not been without its challenges. Some residents of Cicero have found the I-81 construction to be a significant inconvenience[5]. To keep the community informed, an open house has been scheduled to discuss the construction of I-81 on the South Side and downtown Syracuse[6].

For those interested in the progress of the construction at the DeWitt exits on I-481, a video tour is available[7]. The editorial board shares their opinion that progress from the I-81 construction is not necessarily painless[8].

Despite the challenges, the transformation of Interstate 81 into Business Loop 81 is a significant step towards a more pedestrian-friendly and modern downtown Syracuse.
