Apartment owner kickouts basketball player Malik Beasley following investigation into gambling controversy in Detroit
In a surprising turn of events, NBA player Malik Beasley is currently grappling with a series of legal and financial challenges. The 27-year-old athlete, who has played for six teams since being drafted 19th overall in 2016, finds himself at the centre of a federal gambling investigation and an eviction from his luxury Detroit apartment.
On August 6, 2025, Beasley was evicted from his $7,000-per-month high-rise apartment at The Stott, part of Dan Gilbert's business ventures. The eviction followed two lawsuits due to Beasley's failure to pay rent, totalling around $21,505. Beasley failed to respond to the second lawsuit, resulting in a default judgment being filed against him on Wednesday.
Beyond the rent issues, Beasley owes over $8 million in debts to various creditors, including his former marketing agency, Hazan Sports Management, for whom he failed to repay a $650,000 advance. He also has outstanding debts to a celebrity barber and a dentist that were partially paid through wage garnishment facilitated by the Detroit Pistons.
The federal gambling investigation, initiated by the U.S. District Attorney’s office on June 29, 2025, alleges that Beasley was involved in gambling on NBA games. However, as of June, no charges have been filed against him. His attorney, Steve Haney, emphasized that an investigation is not a charge, and Beasley has the presumption of innocence.
Despite these challenges, Beasley remains determined. In a recent Snapchat video, he expressed a sense of determination and a "chip on his shoulder." He also mentioned that he is prepared to either return to the Pistons or join another team.
Last season, Beasley put up exceptional numbers, finishing second in Sixth Man of the Year voting. He made 319 3-pointers in 82 appearances (18 starts), trailing only Anthony Edwards in the league. Beasley signed a one-year, $6 million contract with Detroit last year, but the Pistons decided not to offer him a three-year, $42 million contract.
