Audi Mulls US Plant Amid Tariff Tensions

American soil could soon house a new Audi factory, thanks to the trade tussles between the US and the EU.

The German automaker is weighing the idea of setting up shop in the southern part of the States as a strategic ploy to skirt the tariffs slapped by President Donald Trump. If the plan pans out, Audi would plow around $4.6 billion (roughly 4 billion euros) into this endeavor.

Building in a new location over expanding an existing one could help Audi dodge tariffs and potentially sidestep potential rise in labor costs, as their Tennessee facility is under the auspices of the UAW union. While a final call hasn't been made, Audi is eyeing a decision by the end of 2025. The potential plant would likely provide employment to between 3,000 and 4,000 people.

This potential move mirrors the strategies of other German automakers BMW and Mercedes, who already have factory operations in the US, aiming to navigate tariffs and cater to American trade demands under the Trump administration. To avoid overloading the Tennessee plant with the additional work, Audi might find it more expensive, but possibly advantageous, to go for the new set-up.
