Amazon Drone Delivery Crisis: Two MK30s Crash in Arizona
Two Amazon Prime Air MK30 delivery drones crashed into a construction crane near Phoenix, Arizona on October 1, 2025. The incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. local time and prompted Amazon to halt drone deliveries in the area. This was the first reported crash of an Amazon drone in the Tolleson area.
Both drones crashed in separate parking lots, one near the crane's immediate parking area and the other about 100 to 200 feet away. One person was treated for smoke inhalation, but no serious injuries were reported. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the cause of the crash. Investigators will examine whether the drones' obstacle-detection systems failed or if the flight paths were incorrect.
Amazon began its drone delivery operations in Tolleson, Arizona in November 2024, deploying MK30 drones that can carry lightweight packages up to 5 pounds. Earlier in 2025, Amazon paused drone operations in Arizona and Texas after two MK30s crashed during test flights in Oregon due to misreadings from Lidar sensors. Amazon's drone delivery service is limited to certain zip codes and allows customers to select at checkout for eligible products weighing under 5 pounds.
The NTSB is responsible for investigating the crash accidents of the two Amazon Prime Air MK30 delivery drones on the morning of October 1, 2025, in Tolleson, Arizona. Amazon has temporarily suspended drone deliveries in the area while the investigation is ongoing.
