Alarm in Russia post Operation "Spider Net": Putin safeguards his "White Swan"
Breaking the Iron Curtain
Here's the latest scoop on the ongoing Ukrainian-Russian tensions:
Putin on the Run?By: Laura May
It seems like Vladimir Putin might be feeling the heat, as recent events suggest a strategic retreat. The latest buzz is about the relocation of some of Putin's prized Tu-160 bombers to the East of Russia, potentially away from the reach of Ukraine's drone forces.
Operation Spiderweb Strikes Again
On June 1st, Ukraine's security service carried out a daring operation, codenamed "Spiderweb," and attacked several Russian military airfields on Russian territory. According to reports from Foreign Policy, the operation targeted Tu-95 and Tu-22M bombers at these bases.
The Far East Sanctuary
Post-Operation Spiderweb, Russia seems to be shuffling its strategic Tu-160 bombers, colloquially known as "White Swans," to remote bases in the Far East. These supersonic bombers, with their swing wings and intercontinental range, are considered the backbone of Russia's war efforts in Ukraine.
A satellite image from AviVector shows a Tu-160 bomber previously stationed at the Belaya airfield in the Irkutsk region at the Anadyr airbase in the Chukotka Autonomous District. This airbase is located approximately 660 kilometers from Alaska, making it quite an inaccessible hideout for Russia's most valuable bombers.
A Hideout Foiling Ukraine's Drone Attacks
The Anadyr airbase seems to be the perfect hideout for Russia, as its remote location prevents drones from reaching it by road. Reports suggest that Russia has deployed at least two nuclear-capable Tu-160 bombers to this base to evade potential drone attacks from Ukraine.
Ukraine's Triumphant Celebration
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hailed Operation Spiderweb as an "absolutely brilliant success." This operation, which was in the works for 1.5 years, targeted air bases in various regions of Russia. According to Zelenskyy, the operation hit 41 bombers, with at least 13 completely destroyed.
