Airbus Opens New Customer Support Centre in Johannesburg

Airbus has expanded its presence in Africa with the opening of a new Customer Support Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa. The facility is dedicated to serving Airbus commercial aircraft across the continent, including the A320 and A350 models.

The Johannesburg centre offers a comprehensive range of services such as technical assistance, engineering and maintenance solutions, fleet performance analysis, training services, and on-site customer support for Airbus families including the A220, A320, A330, and A350.

This expansion is a strategic move to bring Airbus closer to its nearly 40 airline customers operating over 260 Airbus aircraft across the continent. By enhancing customer proximity and support, Airbus aims to improve operational reliability and service delivery to African carriers.

The new support centre is part of Airbus’ broader effort to deepen local technical capabilities, foster job creation, and develop the aerospace sector in Africa. According to Airbus’ Global Services Forecast, there will be a need for 14,000 new pilots and 21,000 mechanics and engineers on the African continent in the next 20 years to meet the surge in air travel demand.

The centre's opening underscores Airbus' confidence in the region's potential and its investment in local capabilities. Gabriel Semelas, President of Airbus in the Middle East and Africa, stated that the new centre expands Airbus' presence in Africa and drives connectivity and shared progress across the continent.

Airbus has been present in Africa since 1976, with Airbus Helicopters serving Southern Africa for 30 years. The company's industrial presence supports job creation, skills development, and local economic growth across Africa. In addition, Airbus Defence and Space supports African governments with military aircraft, Earth observation services, and satellite connectivity solutions.

Over 180 African suppliers are integrated into Airbus' global supply chain, demonstrating the company's commitment to supporting local industry. The new centre also features Africa's first H125 virtual reality simulator for pilot training, offering advanced training opportunities for African pilots.

In summary, the Johannesburg Customer Support Centre is a critical infrastructure investment aligned with rising air travel demand and Airbus’s commitment to Africa. It supports maintenance and training for A320 and A350 operators among others, addressing both immediate operational needs and long-term workforce development on the continent.

  1. The comprehensive range of services offered at the Johannesburg centre includes finance-related solutions such as fleet performance analysis, which will help African airlines manage their Airbus aircraft more effectively.
  2. With the expansion of Airbus' presence in technology, exemplified by the introduction of Africa's first H125 virtual reality simulator for pilot training, the company is investing in the development of Africa's technical capabilities and fostering growth within the technology industry.
